MALTASPORT GETS TO KNOW... GRAHAM BORG

Sportsmen and sportswomen answer many questions after each event they take part in, but how much do we know about their lives away from their disciplines? Maltasport.com is on a mission to find out more, continuing with National Triathlon champion Graham Borg.

2017 was a very successful one for Borg, which saw him win the Birkirkara St. Joseph Sprint Triathlon Series, the Sprint Triathlon National title, the Olympic distance National title and as well as the Gold medal in his age group at the Vattenfall World Triathlon in Stockholm earlier on in September.

Besides, the Maltese triathlete closed off a successful season in style when recently his performance at the Gloria Ironman 70.3 Triathlon in Turkey saw him secure his place at 2018 Ironman 70.3 world championships.

Borg qualified for the world championships after placing second in his age group, and twelfth overall, when he clocked a time of 4 hours 21 minutes.

Describe your perfect day…
My perfect day would be waking up to nice sunny weather and doing a triathlon race well prepared mentally and physically where I would perform at my best and dominate the race from start to finish. Obviously I would win the race. After congratulating and spending some time with my friends and competitors I would head home and put my feet up to endorse that moment. I would then have lunch with my parents, sisters and my daughter Valentina. I would then spend the evening on a relaxed night out like a movie or a nice dinner.

What's the best decision you've ever made?
I have made a few good decisions in life but probably taking up triathlon was the best.

What's the biggest mistake you've ever made?
I have made a few bad decisions in life as well but I don’t call them mistakes, I would call them life lessons and probably the most common one is over-thrusting.

How long do you spend getting ready in the morning?
Thirty minutes exactly. I wake up at 5:00am everyday, and at 05:30am I’m out of the door.

Do you prefer a lie in or an afternoon nap?
Defiantly an afternoon nap. I hate lie in even when I’m sick.

Do you prefer a night in or a night out?
Night in most of the times but if it’s going to be a night out by 11pm I must head home before I run down as I’m not a night person.

What's worse, a traffic jam or airport queuing?
I hate traffic jams, I opt to use my car only if really need it as most of the times I will use my mountain bike to commute as it is stress free, it keeps my legs going and I never have problems for parking.

How do you kill time at an airport?
As I compete at least five times abroad I’ve now learned that the best way to keep me busy at an airport or on a plane is buying a new book that interests me and wrap it up before I end the journey back home.

What's the funniest thing you've ever done?
At the age of twelve I had a talent show and I created a very funny play named it Karaoke in Hal Ghaxaq. It was very very funny. I had actually won the competition together with my class-mates.

What's the best prank you've played on someone?
Best prank unfortunately happened to my dad. I used to spray pledge for furniture under the hall carpet at home to use it as a skate, but on one occasion at night the door-bell rang and he came running from his bedroom to open the door but instead I had send him flying...

What would your karaoke song be?
Angels of Robbie Williams

How many languages can you speak?
Maltese, Italian and English

Which language would you most like to learn?
When having over than 20 countries in the world speaking Spanish as their native language that’s defiantly the language I would love to learn and also I wish to go around as many South American countries as possible.

Do you prefer sweet or savoury food?
Hahaha this one is easy …. Sweet :)

One meal, one drink. What would you choose?
Water and Steak

What's your favourite film?
I love true stories and motivational movies. I have many favourites but the one that comes in mind right now is Cinderella Man of Russell Crowe.

What's your favourite singer/band?
I love Florence and the Machine

Summer or winter?
Summer defiantly

Who's the funniest team-mate you've ever had?
Fabio Spiteri

Who's the best Maltese triathlete you've competed against?
Keith Galea

When was your debut as a triathlete?
It was 2010

What's your best result achieved so far?
I have many very good overall wins done in international races but I think winning a Gold medal for Malta in Stockholm at ITU licensed level was one of my greatest achievements.

Last question. What's your best ever race?
My best race was in Sicily on the 1st June 2014, where it was my first win overall. It was the 1st Aeolian Olympic triathlon ever held as well. It was also very similar to my perfect day where I had dominated the race from start to finish - first from the swim, done all the brutal hilly bike segment all alone even though it was a draft legal race and had kept my lead into the run. After the race I was treated like a star and admired by all locals. It was a magical feeling.
