MALTA START WITH A DEFEAT

Malta kicked off their UEFA Nations League campaign with a 3-1 defeat to the Faroe Islands at the Tórsvøllur Stadium on Friday.

On 30th minutes the home side went into the lead through a Joseph Zerafa’s blunder whose back pass was intercepted by Jóan Símun Edmundsson, with the midfielder shooting pass goalkeeper Andrew Hogg.

Seven minutes later the Faroe Islands doubled their lead when René Joensen received a perfect pass from Brandur Olsen, who then dribbled past Steve Borg before beating goalkeeepr Hogg.

But on 41 minutes the Maltese pulled one back when Andre Schembri crossed to the unmarked Michael Mifsud, who made no mistake to beat the home side custodian.

For the 37-year old Maltese captain it was his 41st international goal in 130 appearances for the national team.

After the break the Faroe Islands restored their two-goal lead when on 51 minutes Hallur Hansson grabbed his side’s third.
