SITTING VOLLEY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS' APPOINTMENT FOR CALLEJA

Malta international sitting volleyball referee Nello Calleja has been appointed by World ParaVolley as one of the referees for the Sitting Volleyball World Championships which are going to be held in the Netherlands between the 15th and 22nd July.

Mr. Calleja will be one of a team of twenty-four international referees coming from five different continents who will be officiating during this competition, held every four years, and which this year will be held in different venues all around The Netherlands.

In fact this is the first time that matches for the World Championships will be played in different cities, with Arnhem and Rotterdam hosting the Women’s competition, whilst the Men’s category will be played in Venlo, Eindhoven and The Hague.

This year’s Sitting Volleyball World Championships will also have another innovation, that of the matches being played in theatres, besides the finals which will be played in the Topsportcentrum in Rotterdam for the Women, and the Sportcampus Zuiderpark in The Hague for the Men.

Sixteen men’s national teams will be divided into four groups, with 2016 Paralympic Champions I.R. of Iran and 2014 World Champions Bosnia and Herzegovina being the favourites to take the top spot.

Egypt, Russia and Brazil, however, all stand a chance at edging out one of the favourites in the tussle for the medals.

In the women’s competition, the U.S.A. and China will start as favourites, considering that they are the current Paralympic and World Champions respectively.

Their main opponents for the honours should be Brazil, Russia and Ukraine, with other countries ready to spring a surprise or two.
