EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS APPOINTMENT FOR CALLEJA

Malta international sitting volleyball referee Nello Calleja has been appointed by ParaVolley Europe as one of the referees for the Sitting Volleyball European Championships (Men & Women) which are going to be held in Poreč, Croatia, between the 4th and 12th November.

Calleja, who is also General Secretary of ParaVolley Malta, will also represent the local Association during the ParaVolley Europe General Assembly which will be held during the same event.

During this year’s event, elections will be held to elect the top officials of ParaVolley Europe, with President Toralv Thorkildsen deciding not to seek re-election after ten years as President of the European governing body.

With the number of countries playing Sitting Volleyball in Europe always on the increase, this year’s European Championships will see the debut of two new nations, Georgia and Turkey, in the Men’s category.

Bosnia and Herzegovina start as favourites to add this year’s honours to their impressive collection of nine titles won since 1999, during which they have obtained 53 wins out of 53 matches.

In the Ladies’ category, European reigning champions Ukraine, together with Russia, The Netherlands and Slovenia start as favourites to battle it out for the top honours, considering that since 2011 these four countries have occupied the four top positions in the various European Championships held in the last six years.

These championships will also serve as qualification for the World Sitting Volleyball Championships which will be held in The Netherlands in 2018, with the top three teams in Europe qualifying directly.
