SPATAFORA REPRESENTING MALTA IN THE NASCAR SERIES

Fabio Spatafora who lives in Malta and races with a competition licence issued by the Malta Motorsport Federation, is representing Malta in the final round of the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series at the Zolder circuit in Belgium this weekend.

This will be the first time that Malta will be represented in such Finals.

Fabio has competed in other races of this popular series in previous years, as well as in other prestigious international races.

This category of racing is the European version of the very popular American National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), which attracts millions of spectators during the year in the United States and from around the world.

In the United States, people identify with this form of racing as the cars have the same shape of the cars that they drive on the public roads, mainly the Ford Mustang, the Toyota Camry and the Chevrolet SS.

One distinctive feature of this form of racing is that the driver needs to enter the car from the window, as the doors are sealed! So Fabio has been training and dieting during the past few weeks to get into and out of the car very quickly through the window!

The racing cars are fitted with V8 5.7 litre engines producing 400 bhp, and reaching a maximum speed of 250 km/h.

The final round is taking place at the Zolder circuit in Belgium, which is 4 kilometres long covering 10 curves including 3 chicanes, and 2 long straights. Circuit Zolder is a highly technical track posing a challenge for man and machine.

The drivers are classified in two classes – Elite 1 for “pro” drivers, and Elite 2 for “Am” drivers. Fabio will be racing in the Elite 1 class, and each race – one on Saturday and one on Sunday, will be 16 laps.

In accordance with NASCAR procedures, the racing cars will have a rolling start.

In addition to the TV broadcasts in 190 countries, motor racing followers may also watch the races live through the Internet on FansChoice.TV.

The full schedule, including the practice sessions on Friday, the qualifying sessions on Saturday morning, and the races on Saturday afternoon and Sunday may be found on the
