XYCHESS JANUARY LEAGUES COME TO A CLOSE

The XYChess League 2017 came to a close, with Colin Pace dominating the Premier Division and securing top spot without a defeat.

The league marks a welcome return to Josef Lauri who played his first Classical Tournament Chess games in 32 years.

In the First Division it was the youngest player, Damjan Filipovic who despite being initially ranked 10th, managed to overturn the gap of over 200 rating points and clinch top spot ahead of several more experienced players and was also promoted to the Premier League along with veteran Ron Sammut.

The Second Division brought the closest contest, with Palestinian player Sari Kreitem and local veteran Stephen Attard emerging joint 1st - each winning six or their seven games.

Despite Sari's victory in the direct encounter, it was Stephen Attard who was declared winner on Bucholtz. Both players will test their skills in the First Division next league, after having been promoted.

The leagues, organized by Clarence Psaila and played in a hotel in Sliema have been extremely well received and have introduced several new faces to Maltese chess.
