RECORD NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS

A record number of participants braved the hard winter conditions to line up at the start of Sunday’s first race of the Agones Sfc Trail Running League.

The trail running league which is now in its fifth year, is a series of four races that take the participants’ trough some of the nicest trails on our island.

The first race of the season, a 5km route which takes place on the outskirts of Buskett is aimed to encourage newbies to take up this sport, whilst giving a challenge to the experienced trail runners. The race was made more fun thanks to the muddy conditions.

Simon Spiteri was the first male crossing the finish line with a time of 19.04, followed by Barry Farrugia and Gilbert Spiteri.

The women’s category was won by Danica Spiteri followed by Hannah Pace and Franciska Hehr.

One also has to mention an impressive performance by Matthew Dalli. The youngster placed 5th overall, just 13 seconds behind the winner.

Interviewed after the race Agones Sfc president Mr. Muscat thanked all the participants and the sponsor of the league. He also had words of praise for the organising team who impressed as usual with their professionalism in this case led by race director Caroline Zammit.

The next race of the trail running league will be held on the 17th February and it’s night trail race which is a unique event in Malta.
