NEW NATIONAL ROWING RECORDS BROKEN

The 2016 Malta National Indoor Rowing Championship was held last weekend at the University of Malta Students’ House in which a number of national records were broken both in terms of race times and participation.

The main events of the Championship were the 2000m races which correspond to the standard distance in an Olympic race. Masters and Junior categories could also choose to compete in a shorter 1000m race.

This year, the title of male National Champion in the 2000m male open category (HW) went to Marsamxett Regatta Club’s rower Juan Farrugia who trains indoor rowing under Ken Lake.

Juan Farrugia obtained a 2000m race time of 6:30.4min thus beating the National Championship record previously held by Martin Dugas from the University of Malta Rowing Club by a fraction of a second.

Glenn Zammit, a rower with Birzebbugia Regatta Club, won the title of male National Champion in the 2000m male open lightweight category with a time of 6:51.9min thus braking his own National Championship record established a year before by around 15 seconds.

Glenn Zammit, an engineering undergraduate with the University of Malta has been training indoor rowing through the University of Malta’s Degree+ scheme.

The female National Championship titles went to the rowers registered with the newly established Siggiewi Rowing Club.

Nicole Gatt won and retained the title of female lightweight National Champion with a time which is almost half a minute better than the time she did last year.

Jessica Borg Ghigo won the title of female National Champion (HW) and also established a new record of 7:42.6min, a record previously held by Romina Magro of Birzebbugia Regatta Club.

These rowers from Siggiewi Rowing Club were coached by Mark Farrugia of Starmax Athletics.

The 2016 National Championship, which also included the sprint 500m races, was organised by the University of Malta Rowing Club and Malta Rowing Association.
