MALTA CLAIM FIFTH PLACE

Malta handball nationall team managed to claim fifth place in the Men’s Under-20 European zone tournament.

The competition was orgainised by the International Handball Federation (IHF) hosted by the Gorgianl Federation in the city of Kutaisi, the Malta Handball Association said in a statement.

Seven other countries fielded a team in the first edition of this tournament. Besides Georgia, these were Moldova, Armenia, Albania, Kosovo, Malta, and Great Britain.

The format of the tournament was composed of a preliminary round that was played in two groups. Hosts Georgia won Group A. Kosovo won group B on goal different after they drew Moldova, but defeated Malta with a higher goal difference than Mlodova did.

In the semi finals, Moldova eliminated the hosts 33 -24. Kosovo beat Great Britain 32 – 22.

In the final of the tournament Moldova edged Kosovo 30 – 28 to win the tournament. Hosts Georgia got their consolation in winning the bronze medal by beating Great Britain 40:2

Malta produced a fine display of handball and went on to secure fifth place by beating Armenia 27 – 19. The match started on a flowing and balanced pace.

Malta, led by coach Joe Tanti, took matters in hand and dominated from early stages with a solid and talented performance. Armenia tried to fight their way back in to the game by Malta kept the same standards.

Goalkeeper Reece Galea distinguished himself affecting some outstanding saves in the Maltese goal. Liam Harrison was Malta’s top scorer hitting the target 11 times.

1. Moldova, 2. Kosovo, 3. Georgia, 4. Great Britain, 5. Malta, 6. Armenia, 7. Albania
