FURTHER SUCCESS FOR FEMALE BASKETBALL

Malta female basketball savoured further success following the admirable gold medal won, just a fortnight ago, by the senior national team in the FIBA European Championships for Small Countries when the women Under 18 national team managed to bring home the bronze medal after participating in the FIBA European Under 18 Championships Division C held in Tbilisi, Georgia a few days ago.

In the group stage, Malta was in Group B and opened with an encouraging 65-32 win over Gibraltar and then followed with an important 53-47 success over Kosovo. The third match was a group winning decider against the hosts Georgia and the locals fought bravely but had to bow down with a tight 51-55 score line.

This meant that Malta had to face the strong tournament favourites Armenia in the semi-final which was won 59-43 by the latter.

Thus the Malta girls had to play for the bronze against Andorra and although falling 15-22 behind in the second quarter, Malta rallied back with a strong third quarter, took the lead and never looked back to end with a 71-63 win.

Another notable achievement was the fact that two Malta players, namely Sophie Abela and Hannah Al Tumi, were chosen amongst the Championship’s All Star Five.

The team led by coach Sandro Farrugia and assistant Winnie Buhagiar was composed of Kristy Galea, Sophie Abela, Danielle Agius, Kimberley Pirotta, Noelene Vella, Laura Vella, Jasmine Abela, Nicole Hili, Nicole Vella, Hannah Al Tumi, Kirsty Caruana and Lara Caruana Montaldo.
