BRITISH BADMINTON SQUAD IN MALTA

A British squad of badminton players coming from a number of different clubs will be in Malta between the 16th and the 21st July.

The contingent, which is made up mainly of youth players, travels to different countries every year with the intention of fostering international friendship through sport.

The concept under which the squad operates is ‘Promoting Junior International Friendship through Sport’.

The intention is to enjoy meeting other European youths and appreciate the value there is in international friendship at grassroots level.

Malta will be the 23rd country which the squad is visiting; it will also be the third Commonwealth country. From here, the squad will be proceeding to Spain and then on to Portugal.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has been informed of this trip and sent her good wishes for its successful outcome.

The British players will be playing a number of friendly matches with local Badminton Clubs, starting with Msida Arrows BC this coming weekend. The visit is being held under the auspices of Badminton Malta.

Team Manager Philip Boyle expressed the squad’s gratitude for the assistance and advice received from the local hosts in setting up the practicalities of the visit.

For two of the squad members, the trip is of special interest since their grandmother was born in Malta.

While the squad is in Malta, courtesy meetings have been scheduled with the British High Commissioner and the Parliamentary Secretary for Youth and Sport as well as with the Maltese Olympic Committee.
