BIRKIRKARA SJ TRIATHLON SERIES KICKS OFF

The Birkirkara St. Joseph Sprint Triathlon Series made a welcome return to the Salina - Bahar ic-Caghaq Coast Road this week, kicking of the Birkirkara club’s Summer of Sport.

Over 70 athletes undertook the full distance consisting of a 750m swim, a 20km cycle and a 5km run, whilst fourteen athletes teamed up to form six relay teams.

From the start of the race it was going clear that the race was not going to be a walk in the park for Birkirkara St. Joseph triathlete and National Triathlon Champion Keith Galea.

Newcomer to the scene fellow Birkirkara St. Joseph athlete Omar Said was the first out from the 750m swim, four seconds before Galea.

Galea’s experience however paid off as could be seen from the fast transition times which enabled him to narrow the gap – it was however Said who maintained a two second lead after the 20km bike segment which saw Galea having to contend with a bike crash that caused mechanical problems to his bike.

Galea’s determination saw him fight off Said in the final 5km run segment to cross the finish line ahead of Said with a thirty-four second lead in a total time of 1 hour 2 mins 3 seconds.

In third place was Shaun Galea, fresh from his positive experience at the European Triathlon Union European Championship participation. Galea clocked a total finish time of 1 hour 4 minutes and 5 seconds to make the podium an all Saints one.

In the female category the race was dominated from the very start by Pembroke Athleta’s Hannah Pace, fresh from her double silver medal glory in the European Triathlon Union European Championships in Lisbon.

Pace completed a very strong swim to exit fourth overall. Michelle Vella Wood, who took second place on the podium narrowed the gap on the cycle segment however Pace, who has recently shifted her attention to middle distance races, widened the gap in the 5k run segment. Third placed was Agones SFC’s Lara Buttigieg.

In the relay team segment it was the team made up of Luke Camilleri Cuschieri (Swim), Pierre Borg (Bike) and Sean Pullicino (Run) took first place in a total time of 58 minutes 32 seconds.

The next race of the Birkirkara St. Joseph Sprint Triathlon Series will take place on the Bahar ic-Caghaq Coast Road on Sunday 10th July.
