MARSA AND LSE EXCHANGE VICTORIES

Honours were even between Marsa and the London Stock Exchange in two keenly contested matches this weekend at the Marsa Sports Club.

In Saturday’s 40 over clash, Marsa batted first and reached a tally of 207 runs, largely thanks to 56 from Nowell Khosla and valuable contributions from John Grima (36) and Uday McLean (29). For LSE, Ed Fisher, Dick Walsh and Chris Hewitt snared 3 wickets apiece.

In reply, Abu Tajwer played a sparkling innings of 73 runs off only 57 balls. Rob Hatton (36) was the first of four dismissals with the score at 132 but Walsh backed up his impressive bowling by leading the LSE’s lower order to victory in the final over, despite a 4 wicket haul from the wily Sarfraz Ali (4 for 36).

On Sunday, LSE batted first and found it hard to combat Marsa’s tidy bowling. Nosh Wijewardene scored an impressive 61 to help his side reach the respectable score of 138 for 7.

On his return to Malta, Sean Byrne led the Marsa attack with three wickets in his first three overs. Amar Gorania captured 2 for 17, while the unconventional Gordon Hewitt bowled a conventionally tidy spell of 5 overs, 1 wicket for 12 runs.

Chasing 139 runs for victory, Marsa lost Sumair Khan, Amar Gorania and Mark Sacco within the first 6 overs. The home team rallied through Zubair Raja (57 not out), Derek Ali (31 not out) and Garrett Kampff, who signed off with his best score of 32 runs off as many balls. Marsa reached their target with 8 overs remaining.
