MALTA WINS FIRST MATCH

The men’s national squash team won its opening match against Belarus in the European Team Championship Division 3.

In the first round Malta is grouped with Portugal, Luxembourg, Isle of Man and Belarus. Malta plays Luxembourg and Isle of Man on Thursday and Portugal on Friday.

The top two teams in the group will make it to the semi-finals stage together with the top teams in the other group consisting of host country Romania, Italy, Greece, Jersey and Gibraltar.

Each team match consists of four matches between top players from each country. In the match against Belarus, first on court was Bradley Hindle Deguara who won 11-1, 11-1, 11-5 against Dzianis Han, while Dean Gera won against Vasil Dzmitryieu 11-5, 11-9, 11-9.

In the two other matches Malta’s number 2 player Daniel Zammit Lewis also won in straight games the match with Illia Mikhalchuk, while Sebastien Giordano complete the clean sweep for Malta against Bahdan Mitvinau in four games, 9-11, 13-11, 11-3, 11-6.
