SILVER FOR ABELA IN LADIES' SINGLE

Maltese bowler Sue Abela claimed silver in the Ladies’ singles event in the Mediterranean Bowling Championships being held in Bologna, Italy.

Team Malta comprise of Sue Abela, Tiziana Carannante, Justin Caruana Scicluna and Neil Sullivan, with the competition geting underway on Tuesday morning with the Ladies’ Singles event.

Thirteen Mediterranean nations are competing in this edition of the MBC, meaning there was a field of 26 ladies participating over six games on a scratch basis.

It was Carannante who got off to the better start from the Maltese ladies, opening with a 236 and then a 184, Sue’s decent 191 in game one being followed by a low 155 in the second.

Abela then managed to draw on her wealth of experience in the international arena however, and powered on with a high scoring flurry of three games (214-258-235), finishing with a low 162 but she had done enough to secure second place with her 1215 total for a silver medal, missing out on gold by just 35 pins, as first place went to Israeli bowler, Lynne Fishler (1250).

Carannante played consistently through the remainder of her set, but was unable to achieve the 200+ scores required to earn her a medal placing. She finished on 1187 pins from her six games, a very good effort which put her in 6th place.

The Men’s Doubles are underway this afternoon, and competition will continue between Wednesday and Saturday with two different Doubles events, the Team event and then the thrilling Masters Finals on Saturday.
