ISF BADMINTON 2016 WORLD SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP GETS UNDERWAY

The ISF Badminton 2016 World Schools Championships were inaugurated on Tuesday morning at the University Sports Pavillion, Tal-Qroqq in the presence of athletes, officials, international delegates and guests.

During the Opening Ceremony, guests were welcomed by Mr. David Azzopardi, President Malta School Sports Federation, Mr. Norbert Kever, Executive Committee Member, International School Sports Federation (ISF) and Mr. Joseph Cassar, Secretary General, Malta Olympic Committee who declared the Championships officially open.

Matches took place throughout the day in the two venues, Schools Team games took place at the University Sports Pavilion whilst Selected Teams were hosted in the Ta’Qali Complex.

The Boys Schools’ Teams France and Brazil played what was considered to be the most exciting tie of the day, with France winning tightly 3-2. Maltese teams have shown determined performances with the team securing a comfortable win against Scotland (4-1).

Less success was registered against Chinese Taipei when the Boys, went down 3-0 after putting up a valiant fight, against the team who seem to be one to beat.

In the Selected girls team matches, a surprise win for Slovakia against seeded France winning the game 4 -1. Slovakia didn’t participate in the previous edition.

In the Girls’ Schools Team, favourites Spain were expected to have an easy win over Italy, however they were in for a surprise with Italy giving them a tough run for their money. Spain prevailed in the end to win a close 3-2.

The Maltese Girls Schools team won their first game comfortably against France, winning 5 -0. At time of going to press they were playing against Bulgaria but now results were available.
