MARSA WIN HARD FOUGHT SERIES WITH LONDON NIGERIANS

Marsa were made to work hard to beat English side London Nigerians in the latest cricket matches at the Marsa Oval.

It was the visitors’ first visit to Malta and although they went home without a win, they played their part in an entertaining weekend of cricket.

In Friday’s T20 match, Marsa batted first and scored their 3rd highest T20 score of the season; 176 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. National team captain, Nowell Khosla hit 5 boundaries in his 33 runs, while Bikram Arora (59) and Haroon Majeed (38) shared in a 74 run partnership which included 6 sixes.

David Marks also chipped in towards the end of the innings with 15 runs off only 10 balls. For the London Nigerians, all 6 bowlers took a wicket however Sam Ayinde was the pick of the bowlers with his 4 overs conceding only 17 runs.

In reply, LNCC lost their opening batsmen Gabbay and Etteh within the 6 over Powerplay. Ade Ojomo (36) and Clifford Edebiri (23) resurrected the innings, however wickets at regular intervals put pay to the visitors’ chances.

Sam Ayinde backed up his bowling performance scoring 16 runs but the LNCC could only manage 153 for 8, to hand Marsa victory by 23 runs. For Marsa, Feroz Ahmed captured 3 wickets for 19, while Amar Gorania and the junior academy’s Ethan Xuereb took two wickets apiece.

Saturday’s 30 over match began with Marsa batting first. John Grima (19), Malcolm Crabbe (27) and Bikram Arora (31) made significant contributions, while Sumair Khan played a superb knock of 38 to steer Marsa to the final tally of 172 for 7. Michael Gabbay (2 for 22) and Segan Bucknor (2 for 15) were the pick of the bowlers for LNCC.

In reply, the visitors started cautiously with openers Gabby and Ojomo putting on 40 for the first wicket. A triple-strike by Amar Gorania swung the game in Marsa’s favour until the prized wicket of Michael Gabbay (55) sealed the visitors’ fate.

Roland Illube (20) and Segun Bucknor (26) provided some late resistance but they were left with too much to do in the last few overs.

Player of the Match, Sumair Khan took 3 wickets for 16 and wicket-keeper John Grima continued his fine form to take 2 catches and a stumping. The LNCC were dismissed for 153 in the final over, giving Marsa the series victory by 2 matches to nil.
