MARSA COMPLETE CLEAN SWEEP AGAINST OLD LINCOLNIANS

Last weekend, the Marsa representative team took on returning visitors Old Lincolnians from Lincoln and it was a successful time for the Maltese side as they won both fixtures convincingly.

In Saturday’s 40 over match, Marsa batted first and lost Garrett Kampff early for 5 runs. Haroon Majeed joined Joy Ghoseroy (20) in the middle and proceeded to play the best innings of the 2015 season. Bikram Arora (38) and John Grima (33) supported Majeed well as he brought up his century within the first 20 overs.

Majeed, a slight man, is known for his destructively big hitting and he pounded the bowling for 17 fours and 5 sixes. His 140 runs came up off only 86 balls and it looked for a while that Frank Spiteri’s long standing record of 200 not out at the Marsa would be eclipsed.

Marsa ended their allotted 40 overs on the imposing score of 309 for 7. For Old Lincolnians, it was a sorry state of affairs however Luke Jelly took the honours with 2 wickets for 52, whilst Joseph Waluriewiez captured 1 for 34.

In reply, Old Lincolnians lost wickets throughout their innings, however an outstanding century by Waluriewiez (119) gave them some consolation as they finished on the respectable total of 243 for 9. For Marsa, an outstanding performance by wicket-keeper John Grima saw him take 4 catches and 2 stumpings.

He has now taken more than 30 dismissals this year against touring teams. Marsa’s bowlers shared the spoils with Arora, Ghoseroy, Majeed and Ali all taking 2 wickets.

Sunday’s 30 over match began with Old Lincolnians batting first. This time Josh Taylor led the way with 50 runs but wickets fell with regularity around him.

A fighting 52-run partnership from Paul Bradley (31) and Anthony Hickling (16) rescued the innings for the visitors but they closed on the modest score of 152 for 7. It was a fine effort by all 9 Marsa bowlers with Sumair Khan and Kartik Keyan picking up 2 wickets apiece.

Chasing 153 for victory, the Marsa openers Feroz Ahmed (33 runs) and Niraj Khanna (46 runs) effectively ended the game as a contest, making the win a formality for Marsa who reached their target with 8 wickets and nearly 10 overs to spare.
