THORNTON TAKE THE HONOURS

Marsa representative team hosted Thornton Cricket Club from the Halifax League in Yorkshire, with the visitors winning the series 2-0.

In Saturday’s 30 over match, Thornton batted first and the locals were greeted by some of the biggest hitting seen at Marsa for many years.

Josh Hutchinson, survived an early chance on 2 and proceeded to hammer the Marsa bowling for 9 sixes in his innings of 100 runs off only 59 balls. Nikki Huthinson (28), Michael Shanks (21), Ross Soames (21) and Ross Parr (23) made handy contributions in Thornton’s imposing total of 235 runs for 6 wickets.

For Marsa, several dropped catches were to prove costly. Sid Anand’s 3 wickets included a sharp catch by wicket-keeper John Grima. Marsa’s reply started promisingly with openers Joy Ghoseroy and Niraj Khanna scoring 55 in the first 8 overs.

Ghoseroy was dismissed for 21 and was joined in the pavilion by Khanna who fell just 1 short of his half century (49). Marsa’s hopes were dashed when Nowell Khosla was dismissed for 22 with the score at 145 for 7.

Batting at number 8, Mark Sacco scored a determined 18 runs which took Marsa to a total of 179 and gave Thornton their victory by 56 runs. For the visitors, Craig Charlton took 3 wickets for 24.

On Sunday, Thornton won the toss and once more, elected to bat. Ross Carnall top scored with 41 while Josh Hutchinson followed up Saturday’s hundred, with 32 runs. Ben King (25) and Richard Smith (28) added some valuable runs to help Thornton to their final score of 170 for 9.

For Marsa, Andrew Naudi (3 for 15) and Imran Saleem (3 for 22) took the bowling honours. Paul Bradley also bowled extremely well with his 6 overs going for just 23 runs.

Chasing 171 to win, Marsa lost wickets at regular intervals. Malta representative Sam Aquilina held firm throughout the innings and he kept the home teams hopes alive with some intelligent batting.

Bikram Arora (19) was unfortunately caught off his helmet and Paul Bradley chimed in with some lusty hitting before he was caught for an enterprising 16. With 22 runs required from the final 12 balls, the task was made near impossible when the visiting team spread their fielders far and wide to cover all boundaries.

Aquilina was subsequently bowled by the impressive Josh Hutchinson for a gallant 75 runs and the home side fell short by just 13 runs. For Thornton, Ross Soames took the bowling honours with 4 wickets for 32.

This week sees the visit of Old Lincolnians CC from Lincolnshire with matches on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 11am. The Malta Cricket Junior Academy also resumes with the training session starting at 9am.
