MALTA FINISH FOURTH

Malta finished fourth in the Eurohockey Nations Championship IV after a 4-1 defeat to Lithuania in the play-off for third place.

Both teams sparred in midfield and no real chances were created early on in the game. In fact Lithuania went ahead when they scored taking advantage of a penalty award in the14th minute.

Malta counter attacked but they did not avail themselves of a good move down the right flank which found no takers as the cross flashed across goal.

Lithuania did not take advantage of another two penalty corner awards later on in the half and although the Maltese team enjoyed possession they did not create any dangerous situations in the opposition's D, the hooter sounding with Lithuania hanging on to their slender 1-0 lead.

After both teams missed a penalty corner opportunity each, Lithuania grabbed their second goal in the 41st minute when after a move down the right flank the ball was blasted into the net from the right side of the D.

Although Malta pushed forward gaining territorial advantage Lithuania increased their tally to 3-0 in the 54th minute with a simple far post tap in after a cross across goal from the left flank.

Malta pulled one back in the 60th minute when John Williams flicked high into the net to put Malta back into the game but they conceded a fourth goal a minute later once again from a free hit from the right hand corner of the D.

Malta kept pressing but could not take advantage of three penalty corners awarded in e last three minutes and the hooter sounded leaving Lithuania 4-1 winners.
