Local Sport > Badminton > MALTA RACKETLON OPEN 2015

The Malta Racketlon Open is now officially part of the FIR Racketlon World Tour 2015 and it will take place at the Marsa Club from Friday 2nd October til Sunday 4th October.

The tournament has been welcomed and officially endorsed by Hon. Chris Agius, the Parliamentary Secretary for Sports.

The Malta Open will be the first ever Racketlon Tournament to be held in Malta and is being organised by the English Racketlon Association (ERA) who in 2014 hosted the Racketlon World Championships in London.

The ERA is working closely with various key local partners in Malta including Angiolino Scibberas of the Luxol Badminton Club, John Attard of the Msida Arrows

Badminton Club and Mario Genovese of HiTT Malta Table Tennis Academy. The tournament is also receiving invaluable support from the Marsa Club and the 4 Federations of each of the 4 Racketlon sports.

The association is expecting the Malta Racketlon Open to attract international players from many different countries: already we have confirmed entries for players from Sweden, England, France, Switzerland, Hungary and Germany and there will be many more.

However, through our various local partners we also aim to create a lot of interest for players to enter from within the sporting communities of Malta itself, particularly those existing communities around Table Tennis, Badminton, Squash and Tennis. We want to encourage players of all ages (from juniors to seniors) from these 4 sports to give Racketlon a go (even if they’ve never played some of the sports before). Racketlon inspires squash players to learn how to play Table Tennis and Table Tennis players to learn how to play Badminton etc.

Increasing the general participation levels and enjoyment of these sports is what Racketlon is all about and it is what has already happened in all Racketlon playing countries across Europe and beyond.

A unique feature of Racketlon tournaments is that anyone and everyone can enter, as even at World Tour events there are many different categories for all types of players: from the Elite category for the best players in the world right through to the Beginner’s categories for people who have never played before and want to give it a go.

It is open to everyone to play – a mass participation, sporting event for the Maltese public!

There is particular potential to engage with Maltese schools, colleges and the University, introducing opportunities to allow juniors of all ages to learn these racket sports - all with the goal of being able to compete in an international tournament every year at the Malta Racketlon Open.

The Maltese association have signed a deal with the FIR (the Racketlon World Body) to enable us to host the Malta Racketlon Open as an official part of the World Tour for the next 5 years.

So the 2015 Malta Open tournament this October is not a one-off but rather it is part of a long-term, sustainable plan that could have a hugely significant, positive impact on the sporting communities of Malta.
