MALTA HOCKEY TEAM IN LITHUANIA

Malta’s hockey National team is in Vilnius, Lithuania to play in the Eurohockey Nations Championship IV.

The national team, under the guidance of national coach Pieter Bregman, himself an ex Dutch international, has been training together for the last 6 months in preparation for this tournament.

It has been 10 years since the Malta team has taken part in an International event of this calibre. Only 2 players are still part of the team since the Nations Championships had been held in Malta in 2005, namely captain Mark Camilleri and goalie Ramon Chircop.

The squad however, is mainly made up of young players who have been training and playing on the current artificial grass surface at the National hockey centre in Kordin since their time in the nurseries.

In the past, the national team used to train on the old dusty and shale pitches which meant that the players needed to travel, to experience playing on artificial grass.

Coach Bregman believes that this young squad has a lot of potential and although this is the first time they are participating in an international event and may be lacking experience, he is confident that they will give a good account of themselves.

Seven other countries will be taking part in the Eurohockey Nations Championship: Lithuania, Denmark, Cyprus, Finland, Norway, Slovakia and Hungary

The tournament starts on Sunday 19th July and Malta’s first match will be played at 4pm against hosts Lithuania who will be among the favourites for the tournament.
