FROM 'FRIENDLY PASSES' TO MALTA'S FIRST INTERNATIONAL CANOE POLO TOURNAMENT

Canoe polo is a fast driving team sport played in kayaks in swimming pools, on rivers or whatever suitable area of water is available.

It requires good paddling and ball handling skills, combining the dynamics of kayaking with team sports like water polo or handball.

Players may push or tip each other into the water, sprint frantically after the ball, or ram of ride up on an opponent’s boat during a tackle. There is magic when players emerge from the water, ball in hand, to shoot at goal!

Malta has its first and only club: the Malta Canoe Polo Club, affiliated with the Malta Canoe Federation. It all started with a handful of friends who decided to include a water polo ball in order to spice up their kayaking session.

Years later, the club was set up and now sees around 25 full members meeting at the National Pool at Tal-Qroqq for the multiple weekly training sessions.

The game is played in two halves of 10 minutes, where two teams of 5 players battle it out with a water polo ball. The aim is to score into a goal, which is suspended above the water at each end of a rectangular ‘playing pitch’.

In the coming dates, the Malta Canoe Polo Club is representing Malta for the club's first international canoe polo tournament being held in Netherlands, which will see 48 teams from different countries.

The Maltese selection will be playing in Division 4, Group 2 against Odysseus Jeugd (NED), University of London B (GBR), and Michiel de Ruyter 7 (NED).

Canoe Polo is dynamic, fast and spectacular, yet easy to learn, and accessible to athletes of all ages.
