Local Sport > Archery > MARSA HOST CHAIWALLAS

After a couple weeks of friendly cricket and national squad training, this weekend had a new team playing against Marsa, Chaiwallas from England.

One of the players was not new, he had toured with another team, liked it so much, he brought over his new playing team.

A thirty over game started of mighty well for the locals with Haroon Majeed bowling their opening batsmen J.Toy with the opening ball of the game.

Majeed was to take one more wicket. A small partnership began to build between A. Edwards (twenty two runs) and P. Morgan (seventeen runs), once this was broken only W. Ripley with fourteen runs and extras (eleven) managed to make it past double figures.

C. Foster made seven runs, H. Foster five runs, A. Pollen one run, L. Askoroff did not bother the scores, J. Foster seven runs, J. Garret nine runs and P. Mankenow two runs.

The batting team could not handle the bowling of Sarfraz Ali ho took five wickets with his well flighted spin bowling.

Gordon Hewitt and Chris Belford also took a wicket each, Sam Aquilina also took a wicket and he only bowled two balls. John Grima behind the stumps was superb taking four catches and two stumpings. The visitors were bowled out within twenty four overs and therefore it was decided that ten overs be played before the main break.

In these ten overs the Chaiwallas were on fire through L.Askoroff who took four wickets including Sam Aquilina (fourteen runs), Feroz Ahmed Akbar (three runs, Nowell Khosla (five runs) and of Frank Spiteri (no runs).

After the main break Peter Flynn playing in his game was first to go making a very precautious nine runs and holding an end up after the terrible start the home side had, one could say it was a role similar to a night watchmen. Derek Ali who was at the other end top scored with twenty six runs.

This left John Grima (eleven runs) and Majeed (eight runs) to take Marsa to victory. There were also twenty four extras which did not help the Chaiwallas cause.

Marsa win the game. For the visitors, J. Toy and H. Foster were the other wicket takers with a wicket each.

Next Saturday Marsa take on new team Bikram Friends XI.

The Sunoco Cricket academy/nursery will be from 9:00 till 10:30am.
