BADMINTON MALTA JUNIOR ACADEMY IN ITALY

Eight youngsters will be travelling to Merano, in the North of Italy, to participate in the 23rd International Youth Tournament “Meraner Frühling” organised by SC Meran Badminton, between the 1st and 3rd of May.

The Maltese contingent is made up of Nigel Degaetano, Zack Cilia, Matthew Galea, Mark Abela, Sam Cassar, Yanika Polidano, Sarah Fava and Rebecca Spiteri.

Jo’Anne Cassar, General Secretary of the Association is leading the group, complimented by coaches Edmond Abela, Patrick Cassar, Aldo Polidano and George Camilleri, who having been working hard for the past 4 months with the athletes to prepare for this tournament.

180 players from 7 different countries will challenge themselves over these three days. Games will be played in 2 sports complexes on 15 courts.

In the singles event, players will be put in groups, and then qualifiers of each groups will played in the final knock out phase, whilst the boys’/girls’/mixed doubles event will be played in the usual k.o. format.

The Maltese players will be taking their chances in both singles, as well as doubles & mixed doubles events.

Participation in this tournament is part of the ongoing preparation program, meticulously prepared by Badminton Malta’s team of coaches, for the ISF (International Sport Schools Federation) Badminton World Championships which will be held in Malta in 2016.

This event will also offer the Maltese youngsters a good opportunity to develop their game on an International level against European counterparts and obtain valuable overseas playing experience.

Badminton Malta expressed its gratitude to the Malta Olympic Committee’s Youth Elite Scheme, Kunsill Malti Għall-Isport for their ongoing support.
