QORMI CROWNED HOCKEY CHAMPIONS

Qormi were crowned Malta hockey champions after brushing aside White Hart Laferla Insurance 5-0, while in the other fixture Young Stars beat Rabat 6-3.

Young Stars 6-3 Rabat

After Luke Borg Costanzi, for Young Stars, and Rabat’s Charlot Antonelli came close to scoring early on, the game developed into exchanges in midfield with Young Stars starting to exert pressure on Rabat’s rear guard.

On 24 minutes Mark Camilleri shot Young Stars ahead as a result of a penalty corner action. He repeated the act in the 28th and 31st minutes to notch his hat trick sending his side into a 3–0 lead.

Borg Costanzi finished an orchestrated move two minutes later to send Young Stars 4–0 ahead at the break.

Kevin Micallef reduced the arrears for Rabat in the 42nd minute but Karl Chircop pushed home across from the right to restore Young Stars’ four goal cushion.

After Chris Attard’s shot from a tight angle caressed the cross bar, he put his name on the score sheet scoring Young Stars’ sixth. A late Rabat rally saw Antonelli score twice the final whistle blowing leaving Young Stars 6 – 3 winners.

White Hart Laferla Insurance 0-5 Qormi

Qormi made sure of winning the championship with an emphatic victory in their last game of the season.

After not taking advantage of four penalty corners Steve Tanti shot his side ahead in the 10th minute.

They continued to exert pressure and in the 21st minute Robert Vassallo Agius, White Hart’s custodian was instrumental in stopping them going further ahead.

However he was helpless to stop Tanti scoring his second goal after he picked up a pass from Thomas Degiovanni putting his side in a two goal lead which they held up to half time.

In the 42nd minute Kyle Micallef connected with a goal bound shot to send Qormi further ahead and Juan Sarcia netted their fourth from a penalty corner action.

Ayrton Falzon added a fifth in the 55th minute. However White Hart did not throw in the towel but were unable to reduce the arrears despite winning six penalty corners in the last ten minutes of the match.

After this match Qormi were crowned champions for the sixth year in a row and the ninth in their history.
