BSJ ARCH CRITERIUM A SUCCESS

Birkirkara St. Joseph’s Cycling Section organised the first edition of the BSJ Arch Criterium in their home town at Fleur-de-Lys.

This inaugural event coincides with the Club’s 40th Anniversary and the 400th anniversary since the inauguration of the aqueducts by Grand Master Wignacourt. These aqueducts served as a fitting backdrop on the race route held on Mdina Road.

Malta’s top cyclists took part in this second race of the season in the calendar of the Malta Cycling Federation.

The fast course enabled a large group of cyclists to stay together throughout the whole race and it was only in the final sprint that Christain Formosa of Team Greens managed to beat Steve Sciberras of Birkirkara St. Joseph, to carry the honours. Maurice Formosa of The Cyclist finished in third place.

It was sweet revenge for Hannah Pace of The Cyclist, as she won this race comfortably, after having been beaten by Birkirkara St. Joseph’s Michelle Vella Wood in the previous race.

The latter finished second, with the ever improving Stephanie Alden of The Cyclist finishing third.

The other winners in the various categories were Steve Attard Montalto (The Cyclist) in the Juniors category, Joe Bonello (Team Greens) in the over 40’s category, Steve Bell (The Cyclist) in the over 50’s category, Isaac Spiteri (Agones S.C.) in the Under 15 Boys category, and Christina Spiteri (Agones S.C.) in the Girls Under 12 category.

Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club would like to thank the Birkirkara Local Council, the Fleur-de-Lys Administrative Committee, Transport Malta, the Traffic Police Section, and their sponsors for their assistance in the organisation of this race.
