QORMI AND YOUNG STARS BOTH WIN

Qormi brushed aside Hotsticks 6-2, while in the other weekend’s MHA Challenge Cup fixture Young Stars beat White Hart 2-0.

Qormi 6-2 Hotsticks

The early skirmishes were dominated by Qormi and in the 7th minute John Williams lashed onto a through pass but could not beat the Hotsticks custodian in a one on one situation.

The game was being played at a fast pace and after not converting a penalty corner in the 13th minute Qormi went ahead in the 17th minute when Williams netted pouncing onto a rebound.

Both John Borg and Steve Tanti went close to adding on to Qormi’s tally around the 22nd minute mark off penalty corner actions and Borg sent his team 2-0 up in the 29th minute from a penalty corner.

Four minutes later Juan Sarcia scored Qormi’s third hitting an absolute bullet of a shot into the top corner from yet another penalty corner, but as usual matches produce their twists and turns and Hotsticks fought back scoring twice one minute either side of half time.

Shawn Grima netted the first while Julian Zahra scored their second, slashing Qormi’s lead to 3-2.

In the 44th minute Qormi went back into their comfort zone when Tanti pushed home a cross from the right to take a 4-2 lead and they extended their tally to six when Isaac Mansueto scored two goals late in the game to register a well deserved 6-2 victory.

Young Stars 2-0 White Hart

In virtually the first committed attack of the game Young Stars won a penalty corner in the 9th minute and Mark Camilleri slotted home to send them 1 -0 up.

From then on play was restricted to midfield exchanges and it was not until the 21st minute that Young Stars won three penalty corners in four minutes which they were unable to convert.

Play fluctuated from end to end with both teams creating half chances but half time was reached with Young Stars leading by a solitary goal.

In the 43rd minute Patrick Meli cleared a penalty corner hit off the dead ball line with his custodian well beaten.

On 55 minutes Young Stars won three penalty corners b ut did not manage to increase their lead.

In fact it was White Hart who had a chance to equalise in the 60th minute but David Agius shot wide from a penalty corner action.

White hart then pressed hard and came close to equalising on a number of occassions but throwing caution to the wind, they were caught on a counter attack and four minutes from time Ivan Magro Dingli pushed home rounding off a move down the flank to give Young Stars a 2-0 victory
