MOUNTAIN BIKE RACING SEASON ENDS

The Mountain biking racing season came to an end recently with the final race of the calendar, the cross country national championships which were held on the Gudja circuit.

The event attracted all Malta’s topmost mountain bike athletes who challenged each other on the grueling terrain of Gudja valley.

The highly anticipated race did not fail to excite the many mountain bike enthusiasts who witnessed the race.

In the male event, it was full throttle from the first few hundred metres as riders dashed from the line right into the first technical single track.

Maurice Formosa (The Cyclist), Mark Bonnici (Agones) and Etienne Bonello (Team Greens) emerged first from the twisting paths of Has Saptan opening a margin over defending Champion Jason Vella (Pash Racing) and Paul Zarb (The Cyclist).

The three kept the pressure on as they battled each other throughout the course. Into the third lap Formosa lost ground due to a flat tyre, whilst Bonnici fell victim of a mechanical which forced him to throw the towel.

Bonello kept his lead as Formosa struggled to maintain tyre pressure coming to a halt in the final lap. Meanwhile Vella leapfrogged to second place with Zarb hot on his wheels.

Unaware of his rivals mishaps Bonello hammered till the end setting an new course record of 1:09:11 claiming his 10th National Mountain Bike title. Jason Vella finished second in 1:13:02 with Paul Zarb in third in 1:15:28.

Marie Claire Aquilina (Team Greens) was the outright winner of the ladies’ race, she covered the three lap course in 0:57:30 followed by up and coming Mountainbike rider Lara Buttigieg (Agones) in 0:59:12 and Catherine Halpin in 1:00:30

The race was organized by Agones Sports club in collaboration with The Malta Mountain Bike Association and the Gudja Local Council.
