Kijan Sultana managed to win bronze and Kimberley Cauchi placed fifth in the Welsh Junior Open that was held recently in Cardiff at the Sport Wales National Centre.

This was the first ever European level tournament for Sultana. Taking part in the boys under 11 age group, Kijan won his first two matches comfortably to reach the semi-final against Welsh number 1 player Rhys Evans.

Evans had the edge in the competition and went on to win both the semi against the Maltese player and also the final against the top Irish player.

Kijan Sultana then had to face Daniel Lewis, the Welsh number 2 player. Sultana started strong taking the first game 11-7.

Lewis was close to taking the second game but the Maltese youngster recovered from a game point against him to clinch it 13-11.

Kijan proceeded to win the next game 11-8 to claim the match and third place in the competition, a very good result for him.

Fifteen-year old Cauchi, who was competing in her first under 17 girls European ranking event, had a difficult draw and lost her first match against tournament top-seed Stephanie Ryan from England.

She then did well to beat Welsh players Kathyrn Field and Tyra Beattie in straight games to finish in fifth position.

These results augur well for our top junior squash players who, under the guidance of their coach and professional squash player Bradley Hindle Deguara, are already showing their potential at European level.

Sultana and Cauchi are supported by the Malta Olympic Committee under the Youth Elite Athlete Scheme, and by Malta Squash and Harrow Sports.
