TOP MALTESE JUNIOR PLAYER FOR BELGIAN TOURNAMENT

Top Maltese junior player Kyle Sciberras will be travelling to Belgium to take part in the Yonex Junior International Tournament being held in Herstal.

This event forms an integral part of the Badminton Europe international junior circuit; it will take place from the 19th to the 21st September inclusive.

The tournament features 64 players from 17 different countries, ranging from Austria and Germany to India and Suriname.

The matches will be played on a knock-out basis and according to the “new “scoring system which is presently being tested by the Badminton World Federation; that is, each match would be played over the best of five sets of eleven points each.

This “new” scoring system is intended to enhance the excitement and interest of a match. It puts more focus on the mental ability of the player while leaving no room for unforced errors that would obviously provide an advantage to the opponent.

It is relevant to point out that this is the very first Maltese participation in a Badminton Europe junior circuit tournament; additionally, Sciberras will be the only player representing the Maltese colours beyond our shores in this Belgian event.

This participation follows Sciberras’s successful attendance last August at two separate Training Camps in Denmark; the “Summer School” organised by the said Badminton Europe as well as the Badminton Academy run by the Odense Badminton Club.

Sciberras will be competing in both the Singles and the Doubles categories; in the latter, he has been paired by the organisers with Portuguese player Miguel Rocha.

Asked for his thoughts about this event, Sciberras stated: "My aim at this stage, when competing in this and other tournaments in future, is simply to play my best and to fight for every point while putting aside the thought that my opponent may be more experienced than I am at international level.
