MALTA'S WOMEN TAKE BRONZE

Malta beat a strong Scotland 66-59 to claim bronze medal in this year's women's FIBA European Championships for Small Countries.

Top scorer for the Maltese was centre Josephine Grima, who finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Ashleigh Vella added 10 rebounds of her own, whilst Sarah Pace accompanied has accurate shooting (67%) theith 5 assists.

The Maltese girls had to fight off a good run by the Scottish after they managed to go ten points up late in the game.

But under the guidance of Maltese national team coach Angela Adamoli, the girls recovered beautifully in the fourth quarter and a series of baskets gave them the lead, which was maintained until the final whistle.

This was Malta's fourth consecutive podium finish in this championship. Interviewed by FIBA Europe after the game, Coach Angela Adamoli had nothing but praise for the team:

"I am so happy for my team," said Adamoli. "We worked hard for two months plus. I think we deserved this medal."

After the game, Josephine Grima was awarded a place in the team of the tournament.

Austria won the championship after beating Iceland 87-81.
