MARSA WIN ZMERC CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT

Marsa White Stars dominated the final of the Zmerc Christmas tournament after beating First Division side tal-Qroqq Versity.

As was expected Marsa won their first big honour in Masters after being in three diffeent finals before.

But this season with a formidable squad of players guided by the expeienced player-coach Fabio Cauchi, they are the team of the moment, unbeaten in the Premier League and crowned winter champions, and also domnated and winning in an excellent fashion the tournament.

Although veterans, Marsa can rely on some excellent players, still on their best physical condition. Glbert Scerri on his best is an unstopable player.

His footwork is great and is a good finisher, inventing goals from all angles; they have others like Mario Caruana, Rubert Mangion, Fabio Cauchi, Kurt Farrugia and others. Not to mention Alexander Ribic who was missing in final being injured. There is no doubt that the best team won the tournamenti.

They also dominated the semifinal beating B’Kara. However one must mention that B’Kara was giving them a hard time.

In fact until half time the score was 1-1, but when B’Kara lost one of their best players, captain Malcolm Camilleri, sent out for acting as a goalkeper handling to prevent a certain goal, Marsa were able then to dominate and went on for an easy win 10-4.

It was a big first for tal-Qroqq reaching the final on their own merits, an achievement that will for sure give them a great boost forward and with some touches for the second round, will get them some more good results, being more competitive.

They are a group of players well disciplined and who take pleasure in playing. They try their best and losing or winning they show great sporting spirit and respect to their opponents, officials and orgamisers.

In the semi final they managed to beat TARGA GAP on penalties 6-5 after finishing in a draw 4-4 during normal time. Their hero was David Grima (Yashin) who not only had some brilliant saves during the actual game but saved the important penalty to win the game.

At the end of the final, Keith Fenech, ex Masters player himself and sponsor of the competition presentded trophies and medals to both teams.
