FLORIANA TOO GOOD FOR TARXIEN, AS SAINTS STUN YOUTHS

Floriana registered their first premier league win of the new season when they brushed aside 10-man Tarxien Rainbows 5-0, while in the other early match, St. Andrews stunned Balzan Youths with a 3-2 victory.

The Greens opened the scoring after 13 minutes into the game when Ignacio Varela crossed to Mario Fontanella who dribbled past goalkeeper Christian Cassar before slotting home.

On 41 minutes Floriana doubled their lead when Tarxien’s defenders failed to clear a Steve Pisani’s free-kick , with the ball coming to Ignacio Varela, who shot past goalkeeper Cassar.

Eight minutes after the break the Greens increased their advantage when Ignacio Varela grabbed his second and his side’s third.

On 57 minutes the Rainbows finished with ten man when skipper Ebiabowei Baker was shown his second yellow card when committing a penalty, from which Steve Pisani made it 4-0 for Floriana.

Six minutes later the Greens grabbed their fifth when a Maurizio Vella’s direct free-kick beat goalkeeper Cassar.

St. Andrews 3-2 Balzan Youths

St. Andrews went into the lead on 26 minutes when Kevaun Atkinson beat the Youths goalkeeper Ivan Janjusevic.

But the Saints didn’t enjoy their lead very much as seven minutes later Balzan leveled the matters courtesy of Alfred Effiong.

Five minutes before the break St. Andrews regained their lead when Nehemiah Perry beat the Youths custodian.

After the break on 50 minutes Balzan equalised once again when they were given a penalty from which Bojan Kaljevic made no mistake.

On 87 minutes the Saints for the third time in the time went into the lead thanks to Kevaun Atkinson, who scored his second and his side’s third.
