BALZAN DREAMS SHATTERED

Balzan Youths dreams of reaching for the second consecutive season the final of the FA Trophy were shattered on Sunday after a 2-1 quarter-final defeat in extra-time to 10-man Tarxien Rainbows.

Balzan forged ahead two minutes before half-time when Ebiabowei Baker inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

But six minutes after the break Tarxien leveled the matters when they were given a penalty from which Triston Caruana made no mistake.

On 76 minutes the Rainbows finished with ten man when Triston Caruana collected his second yellow card and so was sent off for an early shower.

As the result remained in a draw, the game went into extra-time in which in the second period Tarxien notched the winner through an own goal committed by Samir Arab in 114 minutes.

Meanwhile in the other quarter-final, Floriana beat Hamrun Spartans thanks to a two first-half goals.

The opening goal came on 21 minutes through Maurizio Vella, while the second four minutes later courtesy of Enrico Pepe.

So the Greens joined last season's winners Sliema Wanderers, Tarxien Rainbows and Gozitan side SK Victoria Wanderers in the semi-finals of the FA Trophy.
