PORTER WINS WBC WELTERWEIGHT TITLE

Shawn Porter claimed the vacant WBC welterweight title with a unanimous decision win against Danny Garcia in New York on Saturday.

Porter (29-2-1) won the tight bout at the Barclays Center after a huge battle between the two Americans.

Garcia (34-2) was the more accurate of the two fighters – and started well – but Porter was busier and dominated the middle rounds.

The judges scored it 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 in Porter's favour.

Despite a mostly quiet start, Garcia was in control, landing a big counter right to finish the opening round.

Garcia was dominant early – highlighted by a strong third round – but it led to a much-needed response from Porter.

Starting to mix it up, Porter landed a flurry of body shots – particularly in round seven – as he controlled the middle rounds.

Garcia finally slowed his fellow American in the ninth round and, with the fight seemingly too close to call, the 10th proved hugely entertaining.

Although it did little to help decide the bout, Garcia and Porter both landed their combinations.

Porter was the aggressor to begin the 12th after another even round in the 11th, as Garcia appeared to be tiring.

Garcia tried to counter to finish the fight, an even bout eventually going the way of Porter via the judges.
