At a first glance, the story of the 27th Africa Cup of Nations that ended Sunday with Egypt's 1-0 victory over Ghana in the final in the Angolan capital of Luanda is easily told.
It started with tragedy when the team bus carrying the Togo squad to their base in Cabinda came under armed attack from Cabinda separatists. The assistant coach and the team's media officer were killed, while several others, including players were injured.
It ended in triumph when Egypt became the first country in the history of the competition to win the tournament three times in a row, bringing their total number of victories at the showpiece of African football to seven.
